Report on webinar on the “Role of Coal Gasification in Energy Transition” held under the agies of India Energy Forum on 26th July 2024
India Energy Forum organized a webinar on the “Role of Coal Gasification in Energy Transition” on 26th July 2024. The webinar was well attended. Shri N N Gautam made opening remarks and welcomed all participants.
Shri U Kumar introduced the theme and importance of the coal gasification and has elaborated the role it can play in energy transition.
Shri K S Popli welcomed all the participants and exhorted participants to have meaning full discussions.
Shri Alok Perti former Secretary Coal made important comments on the advantages coal gasification process and can offer a long term solution to India’s energy requirements.
President of India Energy Forum Shri R V Shahi made o0pening remarks on the energy needs of country and coal is expected to continue its important role in the energy requirements and coal gasification has great potential for use of coal in a greener way.
Three experts in the area made their presentations on new developments i& initiatives n coal gasification. Dr. A K Balyan, Secretary General of Coal Gasifiers Association of India (CGAI), analyzed the development of coal gasification in the country. He informed that a new “Flameless Coal Gasification Technology” offers several advantages over the presently available technologies on coal gasification viz. higher conversion efficiencies, lower temperatures, significant lower CO2 generation. He also suggested that the viability of Coal gasification projects can improve their viability by including extraction of rare elements from the slag/ash produced in the process.
Shri Debasish Nanda, Director BD coal India said that Coal India is focused on pursuing coal gasification and shared the new four project initiatives planned by Coal India targeting production of Ammonium Nitrate and ethanol. The projects are been driven by the newly created subsidiary of coal India – Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Ltd. The project at Lakhanpur in Orrisa is at advanced stage.
Shri Naveen Ahlawat of Jindal made an excellent presentation on extracting additional advantage from coal gasification process by pursuing to capture produced CO2 using appropriate CCUS technology and use it for producing other value added products.He shared several initiatives being taken by JSPL in this regard.
