Hon’ble Union Minister of Coal & Mines, Shri G Kishan Reddy, in his keynote address at the launch of the 12th round of Commercial Coal Mine Auctions, lauded India’s historic achievement of surpassing 1 billion tonnes of coal production—a testament to the collective efforts of the Central & State Governments, coal companies, mine workers, industry players, and all stakeholders committed to sustainable coal mining. Shri Reddy highlighted that the coal sector remains the backbone of India’s energy security, ensuring uninterrupted supply to meet the nation’s growing demands. Its pivotal role was evident during Maha Kumbh, where coal-powered infrastructure and logistics supported the grand event seamlessly.
Emphasizing the balance between production and sustainability, he noted the introduction of the State Mining Index to foster healthy competition among states and drive efficiency. As Coal India completes 50 years and GSI marks 175 years, India’s coal sector is undergoing a transformative shift, with greater transparency, competition, and technological advancements. So far, 125 coal mines auctioned in 11 rounds have attracted ₹40,900 crore investment and generated over 4 lakh jobs. With the 12th tranche offering 28 more coal and lignite blocks, India is taking another decisive step toward reducing imports, conserving foreign exchange, and reinforcing Atmanirbhar Bharat. He underscored that every coal auction fuels employment, strengthens logistics, and boosts downstream industries. The growing competition between PSUs and private players has ushered in a new era of efficiency, reform, and transformation in India’s coal sector.
